Biography

        Mr. Gillio entered the coin business as a professional in 1961. In 1964, he joined the American Numismatic Association and later became a Life Member. In 1967, he operated the first of several annual coin shows in the San Fernando Valley and in 1968 he conducted his first auction in conjunction with that show. In 1973, Mr. Gillio's company won Krause Publications' customer service award and has won this prestigious award every year since. He also became a member of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG). In 1978, Mr. Gillio was appointed as Official Appraiser to the State of California by the State Controller.

         In 1979, Mr. Gillio was elected Treasurer of the Professional Numismatists Guild. In 1980, he served as the bourse chairman for the Santa Barbara Coin Show, a position he has continued to hold for the next twelve years to date. In 1982, Ronald J. Gillio, Inc. began conducting auctions in Tokyo, Japan in partnership with Olympic Coin Gallery. Also in 1982, Mr. Gillio's affiliate company, Pacific Coast Auction Galleries, conducted its first independent sale in conjunction with the Northern California Numismatic Association featuring the "Hope Ranch Collection" of Early U.S. Coins and the "Ray Byrne Honduras Collection." He continued as official auctioneer at all shows held by Northern California Numismatic Association for the next six years.

          In 1983, Mr. Gillio collaborated with Walter Breen in the writing and publishing of the new standard reference book "California Fractional Gold." In 1984, he became a contributor to the 37th edition of "A Guide Book of United States Coins" (The Red Book) and has appeared as such in every subsequent edition. He has also been a contributor to the "Standard Catalog of World Coins", the "Official ANA Grading Standards for United States Coins" and the "Coin World Almanac."

          In 1985, Mr. Gillio's firm became auctioneer for the United States Marshals Service. Also, Ronald J. Gillio, Inc. became one of only thirty-two USA member firms in the prestigious International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN). In 1986, he became founding charter member #11 of the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Later in that same year, Gillio's Pacific Coast Auction Galleries conducted the historic Premier Sale of PCGS coins in conjunction with Arizona State Invitational Coin Convention. He also became a consultant to the 25th anniversary Northern California Numismatic Association Coin Show.

          In 1987, Mr. Gillio became a founding member/owner of the American Numismatic Exchange, a computer trading network linking major U.S. market makers. That same year he undertook the management and operation of the Hong Kong International Coin Show which he continued until 1990. He also conducts the international auction held in conjunction with the show and has been involved with the auction every year since.  In 1988, Pacific Coast Auction Galleries conducted the first CERTSALE at the Long Beach Numismatic and Philatelic Expo.  Over the years, Mr. Gillio has conducted over seventy-five multi-million dollar coin auctions all over the world.
          In 1989, Mr. Gillio was an instructor at a series of ANA seminars on the authentication of United States coins.  During that same year, he became a PNG encapsulation verifier for the ANA in conjunction with ANACS.  In 1990 and 1991, he served as a consultant to PCGS on the establishment of their grading service in European and Asian markets. Mr. Gillio then celebrated his 30th year in the coin business in 1991 where he concluded the year by being elected President of the Professional Numismatists Guild, after 18 years of faithful service as a member of the Board of Directors, serving as President from 1991-1993.

          In 1993, Mr. Gillio expanded his auction ventures in the Orient, forging a partnership with Baldwin's Auctions of London and Taisei Stamps & Coins of Hong Kong and Singapore, holding 23 successful auctions to date in the Far East which has sold many rarities. He also formed a dynamic partnership with Butterfield & Butterfield and Robert R. Johnson, Inc., both of San Francisco, combining more than 200 years of experience in numismatic and philatelic auctions.

          In 1995, Mr. Gillio was given the distinguished Abe Kosoff Founders Award, named after PNG's 1955 founding president, presented to a member who has made significant contributions to the Guild and the numismatic community.
